How To Style Your Favorite Jean Fashions

By Kristen Peuvion on January 19, 2015

Jeans are everyone’s go to clothing item, or at least they should be pretty high up there. They’re comfortable, casual and versatile making them perfect for virtually any occasion.

What started out as a practical, durable pant for cowboys of the Wild West eventually transformed into the classic, beloved jeans we have now.

But jeans have come a long way since their late 1800s origins. When they were first made by Levi Strauss, jeans were just meant to be durable with no thought of style at all. They were just meant to be work pants for the miners and cowboys.

After many years, though, jeans got a fashionable makeover when James Dean wore them in the famed movie “Rebel Without a Cause.” After that the jeans trend took off and eventually, people got creative with the all American classic and we now have a multitude of different styles and washes giving us countless ways to wear our jeans in any way we want.

Here’s some ideas on how to fashion your favorite jean styles.

Boyfriend Jeans

The boyfriend jean is a more unisex style of jeans. It has a looser fit than most jeans because it just sits on your hips and then hangs loosely along your hips and thighs. They’re usually cropped, too. All of these features make this jean style super casual and easy to throw on when the weekend rolls around.

For a cute, casual look, fashion a boyfriend style jean with a striped t-shirt and sandals for a spring look or pair it with your favorite sneakers and cute tank.

Casual isn’t the only way to go with these jeans, though. The cropped length that these jeans offer make them the perfect jeans to pair with a great sandal heel for a dressier look. Wear with a cute blouse topped with a leather jacket and you’re ready for a night out with your friends or for a date.

Skinny Jeans

These are definitely my favorite style of jeans. I live in skinny jeans and have pairs in about 10 different washes. They’re super easy to wear for any occasion and with any kind of shoe which gives you extra versatility.

Right now, I like pairing my skinny jeans cuffed with a cute heeled bootie and oversized sweater. You can wear this as a casual outfit or add a bold statement necklace and fabulous clutch for a nighttime look.

I also like pairing my skinny jeans with a pair of fun, animal printed flats with a pretty tank top and cardigan for a classy look that is comfy and casual, not over the top, but still cute.

Trouser Jeans

Trouser jeans are a little less versatile because you can’t wear them with absolutely anything, but they’re still a great style to have in your closet. These jeans are exactly what they sound like; they essentially look like a pair of dress trousers you would wear for work, with a wide leg.

They’re the type of jeans you would throw on for a casual day at the office, not necessarily your go to choice for a lazy Saturday.

That being said, trouser jeans look good with a pretty blouse and pair of colorful flats. Avoid a top with a lot of volume because of the big volume on the bottom. You don’t want volume all over, so go for something that’s fitted so this style looks chic.

Distressed Jeans

These jeans, much like the boyfriend style, are super casual. After all, you can’t really wear a distressed pair of jeans to just any event. But you can dress up this style a little bit.

Instead of pairing distressed jeans with a t-shirt, which kind of gives off the vibe that you just threw something on, try pairing your favorite pair of distressed jeans with a crisp white button down shirt and a pair of heeled mules.

The look is still casual, but it doesn’t look like you just rolled out of bed or put zero thought into your outfit.

White Jeans

We’ve all heard the saying, “don’t wear white after Labor Day,” which is bad news for your white jeans.

However, fashion magazines have been putting out spreads and dedicating articles featuring winter whites, so don’t put those white jeans away just yet!

Try wearing your white jeans with a white turtleneck sweater and a pair of nude pointed heels. Top it off with a colorful jacket and nobody will question why you’re wearing white in the dead of winter.

It’s clear to see that jeans have come a long way since Levi Strauss gave us the first pair in the 1800s, but they’ve definitely changed for the better. With all of the different styles, cuts and colors, jeans make for the perfect bottom to any outfit.

These are just a few of the ways this versatile trend can be styled so try them out!
